Devotees in the Garden of Love

Written by Suzan Lori-Parks

“Atop a hill in the middle of nowhere a mother and daughter sit practicing conversation. The daughter, George, must prepare for below them, at the base of this isolated hill war wages between ThisOne and ThatOne and to the Victor goes George’s hand in marriage. As George and her mother Lily witness the war from way above they discuss how things used to be and how they have changed, illuminating themes of marriage and how men and women are “expected” to interact… Devotees in the Garden of Love explores gender expectations and how they have shifted over time yet still perpetuate the same messages to people but particularly women.”
